This week on Hockey Prospect Radio, in Hour 1, Segment 1, Shane Malloy, with guest Doug Christensen, ECAC Hockey Commissioner, discusses ECAC Hockey’s mission and vision. Christiansen was named Commissioner by the ECAC Hockey athletics administrators in June 2023 after serving as Deputy Commissioner of the USHL. As commissioner, Christiansen oversees the overall management and operation of ECAC Hockey, including, but not limited to, league scheduling, finances, officiating, championships, and sponsorship fulfillment.
In the second segment, Doug Christensen, ECAC Hockey Commissioner, discusses the ECAC Hockey leadership and the distinguished ECAC Hockey Alumni. During his time with the USHL, Christiansen presented at the NHL Leadership Summit and has spoken to over 18,000 players, coaches, advisors, and parents. As the new face of ECAC Hockey, Christiansen is well-prepared to raise the conference's profile through targeted speaking engagements, creative social media campaigns, and strategic partnerships.
Next, in the third segment with Chris Wells, Head Coach of the St. Lawrence University Women’s team, and the value of pursuing an education in the ECAC. Chris Wells took over the reins of the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team prior to the 2008-09 season. In his opening campaign, Wells continued the program's tradition of winning, as he guided the team to the 2009 NCAA Tournament and a 24-11-3 record. In 10 seasons at the helm, Wells has a career mark of 194-130-44 (.582).
In the fourth and final segment of Hour 1, we have guest Ben Syer, the first-year head coach of Princeton University's men’s team. As announced by Ford Family Director of Athletics John Mack '00, Ben Syer has been named the 18th head coach of men’s hockey at Princeton University. A 25-year veteran behind the bench of Division I college hockey programs, Syer takes the reins of the program after recently concluding his 13th season overall at Cornell and his 12th as Associate Head Coach of the Big Red. His previous 12 seasons as a college coach came while serving as Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Quinnipiac from 1999-2011.
In the second hour and fifth segment, we have guest ECAC Hockey and Princeton Alumni Kevin Westgarth, Vice President, Hockey Development and Strategic Collaboration with the National Hockey League. In the sixth segment, we have another distinguished ECAC and Harvard Alumni: Angela Ruggiero, Hockey Hall of Fame, Co-Founder of the Sports Innovation Lab, and Hockey Operations Advisor for the New York Rangers.
In the seventh segment, we have a distinguished guest: thirty-year Head Coach Mike Schafer of Cornell University. Mike Schafer '86 is the longest-tenured head coach in Cornell men's hockey history, and he will be entering his 30th and final season at the helm of the Cornell men's hockey program in 2024-25.
Lastly, we have Maura Crowell, first-year Head Coach of the Dartmouth University women’s team. Crowell spent the last nine seasons as the head coach at the University of Minnesota Duluth, returning the Bulldogs to national prominence with a 174-115-25 record, including coming off of three consecutive 20-plus win seasons. In her time at the helm in Duluth, Crowell has an overall NCAA Tournament record of 6-5 and five NCAA Tournament berths (2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2017) to go with two NCAA Frozen Four Appearances (2022, 2021).
